NEPS 2018 The Who the What and the Why
The New England Polysomnographic Society (NEPS) started in 2002. Influential RPSGT’s from several New England States developed this group to better understand and respond to new healthcare regulations at that time. This group has been working to educate and empower sleep technicians and technologists ever since. The first NEPS educational conference came into being in 2003 as a result of an educational grant from Respironics. This education program is very important not only to meet the society’s educational mandate but also to fund the organizations structure for the year. NEPS 2018 represents the 15th year this program has been offered which is a real testament to the commitment of the team and the contribution to sleep clinicians throughout New England.
Stephen Covey in his book THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE referred to investing in personal development as the act of “sharpening the saw”. I consider attending great educational meetings in my field part of this process. When you attend a meeting like NEPS 2018 you will get a chance to catch up with colleagues and associates that you may only see once or twice a year. The educational aspect of the meeting does not only take place in the meeting but also in the restaurants and after hours.

HABIT 7: SHARPEN THE SAW
Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have–you. It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual. Here are some examples of activities:
I will be attending NEPS 2018 this year at the Foxwoods Resort CT September 6 and 7. I will be attending with Vyaire’s New England sleep team, I hope to see you there. Click Here to Register
I have attended this meeting many times and have always found the meeting to be informative and professional. The speakers are particularly interesting because they always focus on topics that are practical in the day to day diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in the clinical setting. It is this focus on tips and techniques that can be implemented immediately after the meeting that makes NEPS 2018 different from other programs.
In the past, I have always been struck by the evidence based nature of the presentations and the commitment of the educational board to stay noncommercial while at the same time providing a forum for discourse on new technologies. I expect NEPS 2018 to meet this same high standard as previous years.
The Speakers and topics for this years meeting have yet to be released. I will update this post with speakers and the complete agenda as soon as the info comes available.
I expect the combination of pediatric sleep and home sleep testing will generate significant buzz at the meeting. In the exhibit area, where I will be spending most of my time (as usual), you will see a few very interesting products presented by local Vyaire sleep team members including Wendy Krout, Senior Clinical Sales Specialist and myself.
If you stop by the table and ask about any of the four subjects below you will receive 1 or more of the following free gifts.
- A hearty handshake and a welcome greeting
- Free literature on the product of your choice
- A personalized one on one demonstration of the product of your choice
Every day, clinicians and researchers use SomnoStar technology as the basis for their sleep laboratory. You can rely on SomnoStar’s many tools to faster diagnose and better treat your patients. For instance, SomnoStar’ s cRIP (QDC-PRO) technology to capture and document Upper Airway Resistance (UARS), or to better ensure optimal CPAP titrations. You can feel confident in your data because our cRIP technology is the only RIP on the market that has a calibrated signal. Your patients will also be more comfortable during the test. Our sleep staged Heart Rate Variability analysis allows you to watch for invariant heart rate control that is often associated with disease processes such as heart failure and diabetes.
- Software development that strictly adheres to the AASM guidelines.
- Lab Manager is an integrated sleep/wake tracking and querying database that you can use to help document your clinical and financial outcomes to insurance companies.
- Others may have RIP technology, but with uncalibrated signals. Only SomnoStar RIP technology is a calibrated signal, making our Flow Volume Loops and Konno-Meade Loops useful tools to make decisions.
- Our SentryConnect system not only interfaces with you EMR system, but it can also save money for facilities that have other CareFusion/Vyaire PFT instruments in other departments.
Questions for the Team
- What is the difference between cRIP and standard RIP belt technology?
- Has your system adopted any of the new pediatric scoring rules that the AASM has recommended in their new Scoring Rules Update?
- Are there any cardiac features built into the SomnoStar system that will help me market our sleep labs to the cardiologists in our area?
Many clinicians have been reluctant to prescribe a costly custom fabricated oral appliance due to concerns about effectiveness of oral appliance therapy, in treating snoring, sleep apnea and partial airway obstruction. The true barrier to oral appliances has been the difficulty to predict a successful outcome.
Today we have ApneaRx®, The Predictor Device® which for a low cost can accurately predict a patient’s success with an oral appliance. ApneaRx is a prefabricated oral appliance that can be boiled, cooled and custom fit in less than 5 minutes. Once fit, the device can be micro adjusted in 1mm increments, which meets prescribed AASM criteria. I find this product particularly interesting because the ApneaRx is designed as a temporary device for predicting success with a custom oral appliance however it is robust and durable enough to be worn every night. The importance of this last feature is that oral appliance therapy is critically affected by the condition of the patient’s muscles and ligaments which can relax and adapt over time. It is suggested that the patient wear the appliance for 2 weeks before a titration study is undertaken in order for this adapted condition to occur. ApneaRx is light comfortable and predictive of success with a more expensive custom fabricated oral appliance.
Questions for the team
- 1. How do I know if my patient is indicated for Oral Appliance therapy?
- 2. If my patient has severe OSA is this a contra indication for treatment with ApneaRx?
- Do I need to work with a Dentist to provide the ApneaRx?
